For many of the 340 boys and girls who participated in Operation Holiday Homework, the gifts they were able to pick out for their parents, siblings and themselves might be the only Christmas gifts they receive this holiday season.
San Diego Gas & Electric is a longtime community partner and sponsor for this holiday event that allows hundreds of underprivileged youths to earn the right through homework points during the fall to get top pick of the donated toys, which range from tools for dad to perfume for mom to full-sized bicycles for brothers and sisters. This year the SDG&E team made up about 10 percent of the 236 volunteers who packed the community center in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, December 14.
“SDG&E has been a proud partner in many community events throughout the South Orange County region,” said Duane Cave, SDG&E External Relations Manager. “But the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley’s Operation Holiday Homework program is one of my favorites. To see these youngsters’ faces light up not because they are getting presents, but because they have the opportunity to give back to their parents and siblings who have given them so much is really inspiring.”
For more than a decade, SDG&E has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley to bring the spirit of the season into homes throughout South Orange County that otherwise might not have gifts to share. Nearly 2,000 gifts were wrapped on Saturday morning and the smiles on the faces of the children were only matched by the smiles from the volunteers.
Duane summed up the impact of the event by stating, “We’re so proud that SDG&E is able to make the season bright in more ways than just one.”
